Introduction

“ JEJAK KE PUNCAK ” was written by Mohd Noor Mat Amin to provide the general public a proud glimpse of the historical adventure and experience of seeing the Malaysian flag “ Jalur Gemilang ” planted and fighting against the cold winds of May 23rd 1997 on top of the world’s highest mountain – Mount Everest at 8,848 meters above sea level.

Mohd Noor is the photojournalist from Utusan Melayu (M) Berhad - the official newspaper – assigned to document the expedition beginning from the selection, preparation, training and the ultimate climb up to the snow capped mountain.

Although it has been almost 3 years since the expedition and conquest of Mount Everest, no parties dared to commit so much time and energy to document this historic point of the country’s young history until Mohd Noor decided to make it HIS own mountainous task of instilling EVERY Malaysian a sense of patriotism by following the expedition in this 200 page book and seeing more than 100 high quality pictures of the magnificent men and women whom came, saw and conquered the mountain of all mountains!

The availability of “ JEJAK KE PUNCAK ” will hopefully provide relevant parties concerned to support their lobbying of Kuala Lumpur – the nation’s capital city – as the host for the coming Asian Games 2006 and also to proudly prove that Malaysians can stand amongst the tall if the need arises!

Mission

As a humble token of his contribution towards his beloved country, Mohd Noor decided to collect and document all his first hand experience while in this expedition, so that future generations would be able to look back at what the present generation had done, this instilling a further and stronger sense of urgency in proclaiming the famous battle cry of “ Malaysia Boleh ” in whatever challenges that may arise in the future.

The book also represents the excellent support provided and extended by various government agencies and the private sectors in ensuring that whatever challenges that may be faced by the expedition, both morale and financial, will not be an obstacle to Survive, Compete and Excel for the benefit is not only for the “ rakyat ” whom showed a tremendous and unrelentless support for the team right from the beginning and until the day the plane carrying the victorious team landed in Malaysian soils, but also for mankind, where “ at the end of the day, they won not because mother nature lost… but only because they were more determined! ”.

This same kind of cooperation was also evident during the 1998 KL Commonwealth Games, Sepang F1 Formula, Le Tour de Langkawi and Lima and Mohd Noor hopes that hope that the same kind of support will be extended to this one of its kind book – for the “ rakyat ” and by the “ rakyat ”.

Patronage Support

It is said that “ great ideas always come from great minds and a journey of a thousand miles always begin with a single step ”. For this historic moment of seeing the “ Jalur Gemilang ” basking in glory amongst the windy and icy conditions of Mount Everest, we have to thank our beloved Prime Minister – YAB Dato’ Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamed – whom wanted to see that our “ rakyat ” stand tall up on the highest part on the roof of the world!

The Malaysia-Everest ’97 Project was organized by The Ministry of Sports and Youth (KBS) and the Malaysian Mountaineering Association (PMM) with the cooperation of Utusan Melayu (M) Berhad and Radio Televisyen Malaysia as the official print and electronic media respectively,

For this prestige project, the then KBS Minister, Y.B. Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Y.Bhg. Tan Sri Kamarul Ariffin, the then CEO of Utusan Melayu (M) Berhad, were appointed as Advisors.

To further ensure the success of this project, Telekom Malaysia became the “ Title Sponsor ” and the project named Malaysia-Everest ’97 Project with the agreement and endorsement of all parties concerned on August 19th 1996 held at Menara Kuala Lumpur. In addition to monetary support, Telekom Malaysia was very gracious in providing the expedition team a state-of-the-art satellite telephone system for a truly “ Global Network ” communication especially during those critical but historical moments when the “ Jalur Gemilang ” was firmly planted on the peak of Mount Everest on May 23rd 1997.

The Utusan media group and RTM – co organizers – were very consistent in feeding and updating daily news to eager Malaysians at home via newspapers and tv.

Background of The Writter

Mohd Noor Mat Amin started as a photographer in the Utusan media group in September 1993 and is the 3rd child of 8 children, born in 1967 and brought up in Terengganu.

He received his early primary education at Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan Bukit Guntung, Kuala Terengganu in 1974 before ending his Form 5 secondary education at Sekolah Menengah Tengku Mizan Zainal Abidin, Kuala Terengganu.

Photography has always fascinated him since he was in school and he ended up as a part time photographer with Berita Harian in 1986 and is currently a member of the Terengganu Photographer’s Association. Mohd Noor also enrolled himself at the Youth Training Centre in Peretak, Kuala Kubu Bharu, to further enriched skills of photography on a higher level and upon completion, he worked with Berita Harian, Bernama and finally the Utusan media group in 1993.

Mohd Noor began his relationship with the world of outdoor adventure when he first joined his school’s Boys’ Scout and to date, he even went for a jungle survival course in 1994 organized by UBAT (Utan Bara Adventure Team) in the Ulu Cheh jungles of Perak, 4 Wheel Drive excursions in Genting Kijal (1994), 1st Asian Cross Country 4WD Rally Malaysia-Thailand-Laos (1995) and JAMBOREE 4WD (1995).

As part of the Malaysia-Everest ’97 Project team, he also went for several snow capped mountain treks in the Himalayas, Khullu-Manali in Northern India (1996), Pre-Everest expedition of Mount Chaukhamba II in Northern India 1996) and finally the successful Mount Everest peak in 1997.

Mohd Noor is the FIRST and, currently, ONLY photographer ever to successfully develop colour pictures manually on an altitude of 17,500 feet above sea level at the Everest Base Camp In this icy cold temperatures of the base camp, the developed negatives were scanned into a laptop computer and sent via satellite telephone to the Utusan media group office.

Fellow climbers from other nations, including professionals and the British expedition leader, were surprised to see a Malaysian photographer, diligently and confidently, processing and developing negatives in a very harsh environment! They apparently have never heard of the spirit of “ Malaysia Boleh! ”.

Closing

As a loyal and fiercely patriotic citizen, Mohd Noor Mat Amin feels obligated to leave a legacy, for the current and next generation, to see a historical inprint in the Malaysia’s history, in addition, to his capacity as a member of the Malaysia-Everest ’97 Project and representative of the official print media.

For the last 3 years, no one nor authority has ever thought of chronicling the dreams, ideas, hard work and events that lead to a small group of patriotic Malaysians singing the “ NegaraKu ” anthem and planting the “ Jalur Gemilang ” on top of highest point on earth – Mount Everest. And as a member of this elite team, he wrote this book deep inside from what he saw and endured and has no connections whatsoever with any individuals nor organizations.

It is his hope that this book with all its contents will spur the “ rakyat ” to believe in themselves that when “ a person conquers a mountain – that person actually conquers him/herself!”.

The success of the Malaysia-Everest Project ’97 acted as a catalyst for several Malaysian inspired adventures namely the round-the-world solo sailing, North Pole para-jump and others.
